Hi, my name is Latonya.

I’ve taught on Outschool since February 2017. Teaching is my passion.

I am an African-American homeschool mom blogger residing in the Nashville area with my husband, two daughters, and our forever pup.  My husband and I have had the privilege of marriage for 16 years after eloping in our early 20s (read our anniversary story). We moved to the Nashville area in 2015 after a decade of experiencing cold Illinois winters. We are southerners by birth so we’ve enjoyed being back in the south.

Life as a Homeschool Mom

Field trips are a must in our homeschool.

Field trips are a must in our homeschool.

We have home educated our daughters from the beginning with a short stint in public school. Homeschooling is an extension of parenting for us. I’ve grown to appreciate the gift of learning alongside my daughters. Through our journey, I’ve learned a lot about letting go, planning, adjusting, and myself.

Life Outside of Homeschooling

Homeschooling does take a bit of time each day, but I’ve managed to find time to do things I enjoy such as dating my husband (we go out every week), writing, designing jewelry, teaching art and math classes online, painting for fun, and reading at least 12 books a year for pleasure.

I am a freelance writer with work published by Focus on the Family and PureFlix Insider.  You can see my read my work by visiting -Places I Write. I no longer design jewelry, but I using my hands is something that remains important so I now create using a different medium-acrylic paint.

Out of all the things I’ve done, teaching students outside of my home is something that continues to bring me joy. In 2017, I began teaching on Outschool. This teaching opportunity has filled a space that I didn’t think would ever be filled. Along with reaching students through teaching, I create resources for other educators via Teachers Pay Teachers to use with students in their classroom.

About Joy in the Ordinary

I started Joy in the Ordinary in 2016 with the intention of writing about my journey as not only a homeschool mom, but also about my authentic journey of pursuing life with hope and purpose. I’ve shared stories about my life as an entrepreneur, battling illnesses, and experiencing my dreams change.

I’ve worked with a variety of national brands and homeschool curriculum publishers including Dymo, WalMart, Dayspring, Dover, Notgrass Company, and Fitivities.

Joy in the Ordinary is an awesome resource for homeschooling moms and women who are making time to pursue their gifts. I provide practical tips about making the most out of the life that has been gifted no matter one’s station in life- homeschooling, not homeschooling, working from home, or not working at home. My hope is to empower women to lean into the life that is right in front of them versus daydreaming about the what ifs.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by my place on the internet! I look forward to getting to know you!
